Here are some steps to help you cut down flying first
1 – Embrace local options
Before you start planning a visit to Timbuktu why don’t you look closer to home and see if there are new places for you to explore. It’ll help you cut you carbon emissions from flying and give you a new found appreciation for your nearby surroundings.
2 – Take the overland route
Overland travel has never been easier and now, no matter what you want to do, you can probably do it without stepping foot on a plane (you just might have to get a bit creative!).
International bus routes and Interrailing connects all of Europe. The Trans Siberian Express travels from Europe, through Russia, Mongolia and into China and Asia.
In the Americas you can travel all the way from Canada to the tip of Patagonia on the Pan American Highway and in Africa you have great overlanding, multi-country bus services like Dragoman.
Or, if you’ve got a bit more time on your hands, you can take our approach and cycle the world!
3 – Plan ahead
To cut down flying it’s important to plan ahead. Sites like Rome to Rio show you alternative transport options for travelling between almost any two points in the world. It shows bus/boat/train options along with duration and prices to see how you can get to your destination without getting on a plane.
Seat 61 is another site which helps you find train information around the world.
4 – Embrace the journey instead of the destination
Take longer holidays less often
If you have 4 weeks of holiday a year it would be much better to fly to one destination and spend 4 weeks there, instead of flying to 4 separate week long trips. If you don’t fancy spending that much time in one place consider flying to one international destination and take the rest of your holiday at places closer to home.
